I remembered the day I got baptized; the amazing feeling knowing that my old self die with Christ and I became a new person. I felt like the weight of my sin was off my shoulders, and I was on top of the world. My freedom came that day; and sin no longer had control over me. Well, I knew all that in theory and not practically. Who knew there was a difference between thinking you’re saved and actually being saved. As expected, I didn’t know anything about overcoming sin, and I didn’t care for it until years after my baptism. You read that correctly, years after my baptism. So I was doing what most Christian do, living life for me and at the same time ignoring the anguish I felt inside over my sin. I came to term that maybe Jesus just saved me from hell, and not necessarily from my sin.
With that in mind, I started asking myself , what is the meaning of Jesus death on the cross, am I truly saved, does he mind that I am an habitual sinner and do I really need to live for God. First, let’s recap how did we get here. Sin entered the world through Adam and the end result is spiritual death but through Jesus we have eternal life and the freedom from sin. In other word, God has redeemed you back to himself. How cool is that! You have been redeem to be a better version of yourself. You know, holiness.
Now that we have establish the case of sin. What does overcoming sin looks like, and is it possible. Yes! it’s possible and the great news is, you don’t have to live in a bubble or move away for it to happen. However, beware of the doubters whom will try to discourage you that it is impossible to overcome sin. As a result of overcoming my own personal sin, struggles, and shortcomings , I came up with few steps that has helped me over the years. I was able to overcome them because of God’s Grace and I wanted to live a life pleasing to God.
Here We Go.
- 1. Admission: If you can’t acknowledge that you have problem, then you won’t find the solution. I had to admit to God that I like to watch pornography. Trust me, it wasn’t easy but I got tired of pretending and making excuses for myself to why I do it, knowing that I shouldn’t. So don’t make excuses for your sin, call it what it is.
- 2. Repentance: Ask for help because you can’t do it alone. I cry out to God for forgiveness and ask him to change my desire. This is not a one day thing, I continue that prayer till this day. Repentance is not an event or one time prayer, it is a day to day where God is changing you and giving you new desires.
- 3. Evaluation: Be honest about your flaws, and don’t be naïve. If watching late night movie with your girlfriend or boyfriend always lead you to having sex afterward, then you know the problem. You can now identify what leads you to the same place over and over again. Don’t play with sin.
- 4. Connection: You can’t overcome sin if you are not connected to the one who has no sin. Ask yourself, do I truly have a relationship with God, am I spending time with God on a regular and I don’t mean going to church service only. Lastly, start meditating on the word daily, and pray for strength to resist temptation.
I didn’t get all of this overnight, and I failed more than I can admit during that process. However, I never gave up and I believed that God has called me to live a life pleasing to him. Am I still trying to overcome my other struggles, absolutely, but I am not where I used to be. The key is to be consistent in the walk with Christ, not looking back or removing your hand from the plow but instead to continue to move forward. Christ has die for your sin, so you are no longer called sinner but instead saints. His righteousness was imputed on you the day you accepted him for the remission of sin. I leave you with this thought, people will be turn away in the day of judgement not because they didn’t acknowledge who Jesus Christ is but because they lived a life of lawlessness which is sin. So family, don’t let sin be the reason why you can’t enter the kingdom of God for he already has giving you the solution for sin which is Jesus Christ and if you love him you will walk in the same manner he did. Stay bless 😊 and don’t forget to leave your thoughts.
